Ewen graduated from Murdoch University in 1994 and spent two years in mixed practice in the UK. His early interest in orthopaedics was encouraged by the owners under their supervision. This enabled him to start developing skills in cruciate repair, patella surgery and fracture repair.
After a number of years as an associate veterinarian, he purchased Jandakot Vet Hospital in 2005 and continued to pursue an interest in orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery, combined with the challenges of working as a vet and managing a small business.
Jandakot Vet Hospital was sold to Vetwest in 2014. From that time, his skills were put to use and soon became their ‘in-house’ orthopaedic surgeon for clinics south of the river, routinely performing orthopaedic procedures such as TTO, de-Angelis, MLP, FHO, fracture repair plating, and other soft tissue procedures such as BOAS correction, salivary sialocoeles, axial pattern skin flaps, urethrostomy, and ear canal ablations.
In 2018 he was able to formalise his experience by passing written and oral exams for membership with the ANZCVS in small animal surgery. Further training is to follow with the OA foundation in orthopaedic fracture management.
He is now pleased to offer this mobile surgical service to small animal clinics in Perth and surrounding regional areas.
